ZendCon Tutorial day – Best practices

So thanks to my projectmanager (yes you Raymond) who decided to check if I was in the states, we’ve started the day at

6:15AM local time,  and after a nice breakfast I’m currently attending the “PHP developer best practices” session.

Best practices

Matthew Weier O’Phinney & Mike Nabenezny started with Source Control & Coding Standards before we went out for the break. Nothing new to learn but a lot of… wait for it… best practices that everyone should look in to.

When they resume they’ll look into unit testing which I always find interesting so the morning might not be lost.

Welcome to Zendcon

Jacuzzi

After a long but rather nice flight we’ve arrived at the hotel in Santa Clara (after waiting for an hour at the Hertz

car rental desk) I guess that’s what you get when you’re bragging to yourself that the immigration and customs went so speedy. When we’d finished checking in and returning the car we had a nice relaxing dinner at the jacuzzi. Don’t you just hate work related travel?

Zendcon starts tomorrow. I’ll be doing the “PHP developer best practices” & “SQL Query Tuning: The Legend of Drunken Query Master” tutorials

ZendCon Preparations

ZendCon Speaker badgeWith ZendCon only four and a halve weeks away (shiver shiver) and me having been away on a vacation only to return to a backlog of work, preparations for ZendCon haven’t been going as fast as my neurotic ego would like it. The fact that me and my PHPWoman (she’s got the t-shirt!) will be staying an extra week in San Francisco doesn’t help to ease my mind. There are so many things to prepare and look at, who’s got the time!

The tickets have been reserved and paid for. Same as the hotels but the reason why I’m going, my presentation, still only exists in my head. Sure I’ve got the outline written down and vetted by some experienced speakers at Sogeti but I still only have two slides ready to go.

The new ESTA system approved my use of the Visa Waiver Program so that’s one less concern. (I forgot to hand in my green slip last time I left the USA so that had me worried).

Well enough procrastination for now, I need to get those slides ready!

For those interested, my session start tuesday the 16th of september at 2:45PM, see you there!

Speaking at ZendCon

ZendCon Speaker badgeAs you can see I’ve changed the blog’s direction a little bit to focus more on  PHP in general, I’m still interested in PHP-GTK development but I’ll be looking into a broader set of technologies for the now.

As you can tell by the shiny picture I’ve been invited to speak at the  ZendCon ‘08 to talk about The PHP Secure Application Lifecycle. I will be going together with my manager Christiaan (Warning: Dutch only) and I’m hoping to see you there.

I’ll keep you posted of my preparations
